CASE III: US Navy San Antonio (LPD-17) Class Amphibious Assault Vehicle

Huber, Inc. designed, fabricated, and delivered several hydraulic systems to operate the Stern Gate, Port and Starboard Sideport Inboard Bulkhead Doors.

Huber, Inc. designed, fabricated, and delivered:

Stern Gate and Operating Equipment

Split Stern Gate composed of:

• Upper Gate is 12' high x 78' long x 1.5' wide and weighs approximately 20 tons, or 40,000 lbs, and rotates 90 degrees about its hinges
• Lower Gate is 22' high x 78' long x 3' wide (near the base) and weighs approximately 53 tons, or 106,000 lbs, and rotates 90 degrees about is hinges
• Upper and Lower Cylinder Mount Assemblies move the gates via hydraulic cylinders, mechanical supporting devices, and link arms connected to the upper and lower gates.

Hydraulic power sources include:

• Port Hydraulic Power Unit (HPU) operates at 2,600 PSI and 50 GPM via tow variable displacement, pressure compensated, torque limited axial piston pumps powered by 30 HP, 440 VAC, 60Hz motors and carries a 300 gallon capacity reservior. Two hand pump assemblies are provided on the HPU skid as back up and are operated via auxiliary motors or manual hand cranks.
• Starboard Reservoir and Hand Pump Assembly operates at 2,600 PSI via a fixed displacement, radial piston pump operated by a 2 HP, 440 VAC, 60Hz auxiliary motor or manually through the use of hand cranks. This unit has a 15-gallon capacity reservoir.

Control system includes:

• Local Control Panel
• Remote Control Panel
• Fire Motor Starters (2 remotely operated)
• Indicators, alarms, and feedback loops

Port and Starboard Sideport Inboard Bulkhead Doors

Each set of hydraulically operated doors are split vertically with a forward and aft door half that provide a watertight seal to the Cargo Area.

• Overal size: 14ft H x 14ft L with 12ft H x 12ft L clear opening
• Overall weight: 10,000 lbs (Shipping weight: 11,000 lbs)
• Two hydraulic swing cylinders provide open and close movement to each door half, rotating the doors 90 degrees about their hinges
• Fourteen dogging cylinders seal the doors to its base and three dogging cylinders see the doors to each other
• Designed to withstand 90 psi internal and external pressures

Control system includes:

• Port and Starboard Control Station
• Indicators, alarms, and feedback loops
